I spent some time today deisgning a new map for my students which illustrates the location of all the important late-19th century mines of the west. I just had to laugh when I added circle for Deadwood. I know that some of my students -- 8th graders -- will have seen the show, and will make a big deal out of it being on the map. I adore the show, but that conversation will be difficult.
Of course, if I can surive talking about "Westward Ho!", "Dorothea Dix", and "Horrance Mann" with middle schoolers, I can probably get though anything.
I wish I could show the show to my classes. But then, if they edited the shows, they'd each probably end up being about 3 - 4 minutes long each!!

Sun, September 24, 2006 - 9:51 AMI agree.
With the laws like they are now days, they would hang you if you showed it.
However...
We stayed 2 weeks in Deadwood last summer.
It is pretty much like it was in the old days after the big fire. All the old hotels and saloons are still there.
I felt a little funny sitting next to a 10 year old girl in the Number 10 Saloon the first couple of days I was there. I also sat with some 5, 8, 10, 15 year old girls and boys. At the Silver Dollar Saloon, Some mother taged me with keeping a bottle of milk in her 1 year old baby while she played the machines. Oh, the under age could only have a softdrink and couldn't order beer or wiskey.
There wasn't any dirty talk, but everything was real loose and friendly.
Also, about every 2 hours, they would have a shoot out with all of the Deadwood actors. Had my picture taken with Calamity Jane,
It was really cool... -
