I just finished my first time through. Al scrubbing the whores blood off his office floor. ( I wept )
all that little stories were nicely handled.

oh gawd i wanted to see Cy kill Hurst. He was so angry.

anyway, isIt was last night and I'm already going through separation anxiety.
That is until I get all the seasons on DVD.

Any hub-bub around that they will bring it back?
didn't they do that with the sopranos?

just found this tribe & wanted to drop a line, my boyfriend Les & I have been renting Deadwood (no hbo) we are on season one & love it! Les does these perfect imitations of Al Swearingen & his cohorts (He goes around the house saying listen here you cocksucker!) & also Calamity Jane! and I can think of a few people I'd like to feed to the pigs!

NY Times Archive Open for all!

Here's what the NY Times says:
"In addition to opening the entire site to all readers, The Times will also make available its archives from 1987 to the present without charge, as well as those from 1851 to 1922, which are in the public domain."

Searchable articles from the 19th century?!?!?! That's the good stuff!

I looked for "deadwood" between 1870 and 1880 and found this great article from Aug 1, 1877:

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9D02E3DC1631E23BBC4B52DFBE66838C669FDE

"There is not much law or order in Deadwood. Courts have just been established, and the city is policed; but the Police happen to be in league with the gamblers, who rule the town, and so criminals are apt to go unwhipped of justice. The saloon men refuse to pay their licenses, $100, and defy the law. Claim jumpers and town-lot jumpers have things pretty much their own way. The streets are in a filthy condition, and there is much sickness. Taking it all in all, Deadwood can be best described as a disorderly, sickly, sinful city."

a friend and I have started assinging deadwood characters to the people we know in real life, we have someone to represent almost all of them... (this is a fun game)

remember when the breakfast club came out? they showed it in my high school
and had everyone contemplate who they most related to........

who are you??????????????

First of all ... freakin' hilarious title! "Goddammit Jewel! If I see any unauthoirzed cinammon on that table ... !"

I'm also amazed at the sense of anxiety that I'm feeling regarding the innevitable showdown between Hearst and the town coalition. So few shows can build up this kind of dram over the course of months. LOST can ... Galactica can ... Deadwood can. But not many more.

And what the fuck was with the tailor? The guy came from New York just to sell Al a finger-stump cozy?! Did I read that right?

And how cute was Blazanov when he was getting all pissed off at Hearst? Crazy russkie.

Has anyone heard anything? I just finished season 3 on DVD, and of course want more..
This is the last thing I read about them:

> In rec.arts.movies.past-films Jim Beaver wrote:

> : Milch is currently working on the script for the first Deadwood movie,
> and
> : negotiations with the actors to shoot probably next June are getting
> : underway.

> I hope that you're holding out for a clause guaranteeing high-speed
> Internet access in your dressing room.

We had internet access for about six months before I even found out about it.

I ain't holdin' out for nothin', in any case.

"Tell Him Something Pretty" - season finalé

If this had been a mid-season episode, I'd've said, "Fine. It was good." But as a season finalé, it was a let-down. Sure, there was some great tension between Al and Johnny, and Cy's killing of Leon came out of NOWHERE! But ... I mean ... I wanted a huge gunfight dammit!!!!! The whole season was leading up to this big show down ... and Hearst just leaves????!!!! WTF ??!!!

And who won the election??!!

Favorite line:

Farnum to Al: "Everytime I hear his voice, I see the inside of his skull! Phantoms grin at me; oozing gruesome goo!"

I spent some time today deisgning a new map for my students which illustrates the location of all the important late-19th century mines of the west. I just had to laugh when I added circle for Deadwood. I know that some of my students -- 8th graders -- will have seen the show, and will make a big deal out of it being on the map. I adore the show, but that conversation will be difficult.

Of course, if I can surive talking about "Westward Ho!", "Dorothea Dix", and "Horrance Mann" with middle schoolers, I can probably get though anything.

I wish I could show the show to my classes. But then, if they edited the shows, they'd each probably end up being about 3 - 4 minutes long each!!

Apologies if this subject has already been broached, but I had a scan and couldn't find it in previous posts. Can anyone enlighten me if the Ted Mann involved with Deadwood is the same Ted Mann as wrote for The National Lampoon, infamous calaborator with Frank Thorne for "Danger Rangerette"? I would be much obliged for an answer.

Odd episode. Kind of ... "flat", but I'm seeing it as the calm before the storm. After Trixie's shooting of Hearst, the entire rest of the ep. was waiting to see what was going to happen. Yeah ... the calm before the storm.

Best Lines:

Swearengen: "My meetings? I provide refreshments."
- - - - -
Langriche: "A little while ago, I heard what I took for a gunshot; an impression I remark not on the ground of its uniqueness, but for the shot having seemed to issue from so near to my recumbent ear."
- - - - -
Jewel: "Godammit Richardson! You're too ugly to go sneekin' up on fuckin' people!"
- - - - -
Swearengen: "Heng dai. Heng dai, fuckin' Wu."

Is Jane just not the most tragic character on TV. Good god, I almost wept during her scene with Joanie where she was describing her dreams. I really do hope that she recovers some part of her life before Deadwood ends.

Favorite quotes from this episode:

Con Stapleton: "I beg you; release your man-stallion from his he-stable for another gallop 'round the ring."
-----
Langrishe: "As your faith must proscribe your receiving bribes, credit the five to her room."
-----
Heast: "Are you sayin' you wanna fuck me?"
Jarry: "What?"
Hearst: "Well, you keep callin' yourself Alcibiades to my Socrates. Are you proposing some sort of homosexual connection between us?"
Jarry: " ... I forgot that part of the story."
-----
Hearst: "Elections cannot 'inconvenience' me! They ratify my will, or I neuter them!"

Whoo! It keeps getting better and better. You can feel the crescendo to the season finalé.

Wu seems to have doubled his vocabulary while he was away from camp. Now we get "Custer", "OK", and "city". Ha ha!

I liked how Trixie was sooo proud of the $12 she put in the bank, and it was actually touching to see Richardson comforting Aint Lou. And that the hell is Farnham's deal? He's such a little shit for puching Richardson around. What a little prick!

And poor Jane. The woman really needs an intervention.

My favorite part was the very ending though. Al's singing actually touched me. To see such a bad-ass motherfucker singing an Irish folk song, was really quite endearing.

Well, first off, I have to say that Brian Cox as Jack Langrishe is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters on the show. The man really is quite an amazing actor.

It was also fun to see Sam Fields get the chance to give Steve what-for. Nothing that a little gruel in the face won't settle!

This totally sucks! I am going to write to them and let them know that this is a bad, bad, bad decision and I will certainly cancel my HBO FOREVER if they let Deadwood go.

Let's mobilize!

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/05/12/television.deadwood.reut/index.html

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- The upcoming third season of HBO's "Deadwood" might mark the end of the dark Western.

The pay cable network has opted not to pick up the options of the actors on the show, releasing them to pursue other projects.

"Deadwood" creator David Milch is shifting his attention to "John From Cincinnati," a one-hour project he is writing for HBO. The surfing-themed drama has been ordered as a pilot, subject to finalizing deals on the financial and talent side.

HBO sources said there are conversations about the future of "Deadwood" beyond the third season, which premieres June 11. But with the actors moving on to other commitments, it is highly unlikely that all the main cast members would be available to do additional episodes in the future.

I called the studio where Deadwood is filmed, asking if tours are available.
I wanted to see the interiors and exteriors.

An only exterior tour is available soon, but the full tour is not available currently, because they are just finishing up the last episode of season 3.

I was advised to call back in July when production is set to begin on season 4.

For those interested and in the SoCal area, its filmed at Melody Ranch near Magin Mtn

Perhaps THIS is the PERFECT Deadwood FIX ...

Before David Milch, there was Pete Dexter ... and his astonishing novel, DEADWOOD.

I think I might've even read it back in '86 when it was first published, but considering some of the things I did in '86, I'm fortunate to even remember my name.

Either way, I picked up the paperback yesterday and can hardly wait to dive into these awesome pages.

Anyone having read Pete Dexter, the recipient of the National Book Award, knows the man is one hell of a terrific author; with novels such as "Paris Trout", "God's Pocket', "Brotherly Love" and "Train"—all critically-acclaimed and considered modern day classics.

Supposedly, the characters in this book, with the exception of one (a fictitious young man named Malcom Nash) are all real.

Already, on just the first three pages, Charley Utter and Wild Bill Hickock have linked up and are headed to some place out west called Deadwood; and you know what awaits them: murderers, whores and other forms of cocksuckers.

So, folks, if you're all jonesing for a little Deadwood fix, I recommend this novel. According to author Jonathan Franzen, "If you want to call 'Deadwood' a Western, you might as well call 'The House Of Mirth' chick lit."

Or as the Washington Post so aptly puts it: Pete Dexter's "'Deadwood' may well be the best western ever written."

Deadwood Season 3 Dealyed Until June 2006

I am SO unhappy about this!

12/01/2005

"Deadwood" delay

caters to Tom Hanks

HBO has pushed back the third-season premiere of "Deadwood" to June, meaning there will be more than a year's delay between "Deadwood" seasons.

Instead, "Big Love," Tom Hanks' much-anticipated drama starring Bill Paxton as a Morman polygamist and Chloe Sevigny as one of his three wives, will get the time slot after "The Sopranos," which launches its sixth season in March.

HBO decided "Love," as a new show, would benefit more from a "Sopranos" lead-in on Sunday nights, the network told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The June lineup has "Deadwood" on Sundays followed by season three of "Entourage" and "Lucky Louie," a new comedy starring Louis C.K.

I found this DVD in a dollar store titled (well, see above...) and also starring Gabby Hayes. Of course I got it, it's black & white & 56 minutes long. Timing? Synchronicity? Personally, I think Deadwood is the best series out there & can't wait for season 3..(crossing fingers). So all you cocksuckers out there...keep thinking "more Deadwood ....more Deadwood

I have run into 2 people I have loaned the Season 1 DVD to and have gotten back comments about how they would have found it just as compelling without the profanity. I find it interesting neither of them said diddly about the violence. The show would just not be the same animal without the specific use of language in my opinion.

Well, it would be a lighter animal, seeing as how it got it's balls cut off!

Honestly, profanity does not bother me at all if it's set in the right context...I just don't get it.

Rant over.

Hey all. Had to share. On my road trip across the country I stopped in Deadwood (had to!). It was really cool to actually be there and see where Wild Bill was killed, stay in the hotel that Bullock built, have a drink at the Gem...

AND I saw some guy literally get thrown out of a bar. He landed on his ass on the sidewalk with the bouncer yelling to the guy's friend, "you better get him the fuck outta here or he's goin to jail!"

I'll post photos soon.

Got this excerpt for a *Maxim* interview with Mr. Mc Shane.

Maxim: While we're on the topic, who are the real-life cocksuckers?

McShane: Politicians. Producers. The money people. People who run things, or believe they/re in charge. People who promote the trickle down theory of economics. Team owners who demand their taxpayers build them a new stadium for them. And anyone who has anything to do with running a Wal-Mart.

I HATE WALMART! I love Ian!

Loved this episode - I'm a complete addict at this point. Thank god there is intelligent TV on Sunday Nights. I wish that I could see the next episode right now this minute...

Did Wolcott kill himself?
Will Bullock get back with Mrs Garrett?
Is Tolliver losing it?
Is Calamity Jane going to be a whore?

Love the Shakespearian elements and am looking forward to another season...

Love,
The great great great niece of Wild Bill Hickok (via my great grandmother Edith Hickok-Freidel!

RIP young William.

Damnit, he was a sweet kid. OUCH! Yes, I'm sentimental. But of course that kind of thing happened all the time back then and still does, though these days it's most likely to be a car. If anyone's read any diaries of the pioneer's journies westward, it's full of that stuff. I think the track westward from -- Iowa? to Oregon/California averaged about one grave every three miles or something like that -- cholera, food poisoning, drowning, horse-trampling, wagon accident, childbirth, diptheria, snakebite, appendicitis.

Anyone else seen postmortem photography from that era? Pretty interesting.

So what will happen now? Will Martha go back to Michigan? Even so where does that leave Seth and Alma? Will Seth and Martha get divorced? That was practically unheard of in those days, unless your spouse did something REALLY egregious, and everyone in Deadwood knows Seth is married so he can't make an honest woman out of Alma without divorcing Martha -- and the fallout from that might be disastrous.

Poor Tom Nuttall, it wasn't his bi-cycle's fault. And though I can't blame the Nigger General or Hostettler for running, I still lost a bit of respect for N.G. Not so much for H., being willing to return even if it meant the necessity of blowing his own head off before he could be lynched.

Strange episode, was it not? (May 1, 2005)

Slightly disjointed. Scenes dramatically intercut. A sense of dread amidst all the comic chatter.

W taunting the big fat brother-killer. Bizarre, isn't it that it takes a cold-blooded killer to smoke another one out?

The big bike bit was a bit over the top. But then it turned out that it was all a set-up for tragedy. (A runaway horse, my kingdom for a runaway horse ...)

Jane and Charlie; now there's an odd couple. The 19th century version of Ralph and Alice on "The Honeymooners." (Pow, zam, to the moon, Jane!)

Al, with those bifocals, he's soooo Ben Franklin. He looks like the sage of the sagebrush.

And what's with the bubbly publisher? And who's been dry-cleaning his stately wardrobe? Watch out, New York Times ~ The Deadwood Pioneer just ran off an extra 100 sheets! Wowee!

Speaking of dry cleaners, W looked real sharp. Starched collar, silk tie; but is that a straight razor in your pocket or your pencil stub of a dick, you slick sick prick?

The Russian telegrapher ~ dot-dot-dash~ though he's a tenderfoot and a greenhorn, we'll probably find out he's got a lot more balls than most Deadwoodians.

Starr and Trixie; oy vay! He trusts her with the books, so go ahead and please make an honest woman out of her. It's a fact: ex-whores make the best wives.

Sherrif Bullock is (1) an expectant pop (2) a budding stepdad/uncle (3) a gentelman hubby and (4) an honest cop. Now the question arises, is he (5) good enough (or "bad" enough) to be his true love's backdoor man?

And does he sleep on a board? I mean, he stands so erect he looks like he has a body boner.

Joanie Stubbs and I, by the way, will be officially announcing our engagement upon the climax of the final episode. That's if she's still around. And if I can make her climax.

But all dreaming aside, she's such a dearheart. And dear Jane is her new roomie!? Could be a sit-com spinoff! "Stubbs and Calamity. One will fuck you, the other will fuck-you-up bad. It's not TV, it's Hot B.O."

And Cy, shit or get off the pot. Do something for the town, or get out of town And stay the hell out of Joanie. (Besides, she's got a crush on Jane!)

Well, that's enough rambling for now, Deadwoodheads. Like I said, it was a strange episode. Slightly disjointed, yet some how connected. A lot of exposition, not much action. And not nearly as powerful as the last several episodes ~ but it's certainly setting us up for the final three.

And they look yummy ... just so long as they don't come out of Farnum's kitchen.

JOANIE STUBBS, I LOVE YOU.

I don't know about you, but tonight I fell in love with Joanie.

Kim Dickens plays the "dickens" out of that femme fatale.

And Madame Joanie Stubbs is in a heap of trouble.

Charlie Utter is utterly awesome, but nevertheless he let us down a little tonight. So he could get that Wild Bill letter, he put Joanie in harm's way. No, he didn't rat ... but he confirmed, indirectly, what "W" wanted to know.

Poor girl, she's in a whole heap of boiling trouble.

Coming attractions revealed a split-second of her confiding in Calamity. It went by in a blink. I'm hoping Calamity, who is afraid of no man (except maybe Al, if you recall from last season) protects Joanie. Calamity killed many a man, and lived a long life; although she died homeless and penniless (duh! the two usually DO go together) ~ so maybe she'll kill this "W" dude.

But one way or another, hope to hell Joanie gets out of the next episode alive.

She's so damn "purty." And deserves, at least just once, to put a man down ... without having to take her clothes off. Down about six feet.

The cat house business isn't going so well, either. Why pay two bucks when you can have a beautiful Asian woman for a dime??

Yeah, Joanie ... time to find a good man or woman (or BOTH!) and settle down. (Come on out to San Francisco.)

By the way, slightly surprised that Cy offered to guard her ~ since he's so terrified of Hurst and his army of killers and goons.

I guess he loves (in his fashion). After all, we all recall that passionate scene from last season: "Kill me too, Cy, or let me go," she says. "If you don't kill me or let me go, I'm going to kill you."

Maybe Joanie don't need Calamity. Maybe she can kill "W" herself.

Well, we'll find out next week.

Greetings All!

I'm a recent convert to Deadwood via the first season DVD collection. Here's my problem... I don't have HBO, I've missed all of this season's episodes, and I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS!

PLEASE... is there anyone out there who can assist me? Trade / Barter... whatever. I need to get my hands on the this season's shows.

If you're here in this community, you understand why I'm so agitated. Like Swearengen did the ol' reverend a solid by putting him out of his misery, put me out of mine!

Looking forward to joining in the discussion here!

Cheers,

Jay

...about how much I like that Jane and what a shame it would be if they killed her off the show. Not knowing if Deadwood is supposed to be historically accurate, and not having the patience to sift through a bunch of HBO/Deadwood sites to find out, I googled the real Jane and Wild Bill to see when they died. It looks like Jane will be with us for quite a fucking while.

"James Butler Hickok was born in Troy Grove, Illinois, on May 27, 1837, and was shot dead in a saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, on August 2, 1876."

http://www.homepokergames.com/wildbillhickok.php

"Now 51 years old, Jane returned to Deadwood, visiting Wild Bill's grave in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, and even posing for a picture there. In July, she travelled to Terry, South Dakota, a small mining town, and stayed in the Calloway Hotel, where several old friends visited her. On August 1, 1903, at 5:00 p.m. she died. She had requested her funeral to be conducted by the Black Hills Pioneer Society, and supposedly said, "Bury me beside Wild Bill -- the only man I ever loved." And so she was."

I would just like to share a story of how Deadwood warps my fagile little mind. Most of you will enjoy it I'm sure:

I was showing the wonderfulness that is Deadwood to my brother and my friend. I sat them down as I made them watch three hours of some recent episodes. It's extream, I know...but we all know you can't just watch one episode and expect to get what's going on.

Anyhow, we all loved it. And we were swearing at eachother. Playing as if we were Al and Wu and quoting Jane. Good times. About an hour later, we were talking with my mom and my sister (age: 8). Someone said something that reall pissed me off. I cannot for the life of me remember who said what, but I was on the verge of saying, "Shut the fuck up, fucking cocksucker." Oh my god, I was so embarassed, though I never actually said it. Everyone knew I was about to say something. When I said, "Wow...I watched way too much Deadwood just now", everyone just laughed.

LESSON: Do NOT watch 3 hours straight of Deadwood and try to have a converstaion with children present.

He's kind of like Deadwood's version of Eddie Haskell (only slimier).

I have to say I'm enjoying his interactions with the snaggletoothed cook. The way E.B. just said the words "Back, back!" and the little guy scurried to the kitchen like Renfield or a beaten-down-dog was pretty comical.

is cool. Last night was so good, cuz it was all about Charlie. Wilcott got whupped up. A man would take a real beating if Charlie AND Bullock decided to team up. Wonder what Willcott felt when Doc said that the old guy that just busted his ribs was Wild Bill's bro rightous...Charlie telling Al " to get the Fuck away from me" Nobody better mess with Joanie from now on. She has got a friend, a man who keeps his word.

I'm just curious. What got you to watch the show? lol...And why join a tribe about it? Right?! I'll tell you what did it for me: I never saw the show before, and therefore didn't care. I just recently gotten HBO. This was when they were re-running the season two episodes at a time. I was waiting for a show to come on after it. I would have to sit through one and a half episodes. Since there was nothing on, I was going to sit through some of it. The first thing I saw was Al beating the hell out of Trixie.

In order to find out why, I decided to watch the next hour instead of cook. Glad I did. The colorful language, colorful violence and colorful cast hooked me then. I haven't missed an episode since. I'm even making my non-HBO-having pals rent the first season. lol...

Okay. I need some help here. Montana vs the Dakota's

So currently Deadwood is an un-annexed territory to the States. But since the treaty with the Souix, things are shifting, and I'm not sure how and why.

Swearengen is aligning with Bullock because he believes Bullock is "Yankton's man", and has ties or connections to Montana?

Tolliver is hooked up with Commisioner Jarre, who is from where? And does he actually have the authority to strike the current claims and make them rebuy there current holdings? Or are they creating a smokescreen and trying to rile everyone into selling, so they can rebuy all the land?

Clearly Tolliver is trying to keep a hold on Woolcott, who is Hearst's man. And they are trying to take over Chink's Alley, with the new chink "cocksucker from SF".

Is Al really allied with Woo? Or is he playing him as he tries to get a hold on the new cocksucker.

Silas Adam, he came from where? And since killing the magistrate, does he have any other political connections? What is his ultimate worth to Swearengen?

These are my questions.

In some ways I like that there isn't a lot of cross-pollination between HBO shows, but I was stoked to see Ian McShane joining the panel on "Real Time" last Friday. It turns out that he's a great looking guy with a gentile voice. The makeup artists for Deadwood are incredible.

He also showed up as being a pretty smart actor too.

More muddy-street sagas

I just read an MSNBC piece on the latest in the dirty feet genre of HBO mini-series - Rome. It's a circa 54-44 b.c.e. look at the lives of Roman citizens, slaves, etc... As in Deadwood and perhaps Carnival, the director is shooting for authenticity by opting for muddy crowded streets and dirty denizens over earlier Hollywood images of polished marble and bleach white togas.

Anyone care to chime in on this 'gritty realism' (pun intended) in HBO programing?

Lots of interesting tidbits on this episode, which I happened to like a lot . . .
I like the way the widow is coming into her own power and toying with that asshole E.B.
Love the way Mr. and Mrs. Bullock are suddenly "Seth" and "Martha", and how delicately she let him know she wanted sex NOW and not later tonight.
Loved Dan and how protective he was of Al, and the way he was trying hard to understand the Celestial cocksucker.
What's up with the Borg queen madame? I wasn't quite following her problem with Joanie. . . I guess we'll learn more later. Mr. W. was quite a disappointment in the bedroom. . . . All hat, no cattle, as they say . . .
And the doctor being so relieved that he wouldn't kill another man - it just seemed like such an authentic thing to watch, great acting!

She really cracks me up!

When she was hanging from her horse and suddenly says "I just farted, so what?" I about fell on the floor laughing. I had to rewind it and play it for my hubby.

Plus I love the way she dished the insults to Al while the others were trying to shush her up.

. . .And . . . her story about the fella who was sweet on her and wanted to get married, only to find out she wasn't really a man!

On a scale of one to ten, tonight's episode was a weak seven.

Sure, it had it's moments, but it was overwrought with iambic ~ without the pentameter.

The writer of this evening's episode wrote a couple nice scenes, but the entire piece did not gel well.

Kidney stones. Big fucking deal. Al, I passed three of them; each the size of a baby lima bean. Guzzle beer. It pushes them out.

Characters tonight were either shakey or cranky; and too much pontificating.

I liked the first three episodes, but this one, I'm sorry to say, lacked a great deal. Hopefully, next week's writer speaks more with action, and doesn't get tripped up too much with exposition.

Am I along in this assumption? Or is there another Deadwood fan who shares my semi-disappointment?

I really need to watch this episode again, I feel like I missed a lot.

So the preacher is dead? He died on the road somewhere? And what was that exchange in the end between Bullock and his wife? She removed the what...the board, bed board...something or other. I assumed it was a word for something that kept the beds together and she seperated their beds, with him in agreement?

On a whole other note I have to say I love that Mrs. Garrett was wearing red when she met Bullocks wife....
